VIRGIN GALACTIC UNVEILS MACH 3 AIRCRAFT DESIGN FOR HIGH-SPEED TRAVEL
A Mach 3 certified delta-wing aircraft with a capacity for around 9 – 19 guest, that is capable of cruising at altitudes above 60,000 feet is part of the new high-speed aircraft being designed by Virgin Galactic Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: SPCE) (“Virgin Galactic”).
The design of the aircraft is focused on making the customers experience the highest priority. Creating a high-speed aircraft that can be safe, reliable, and also sustainable are the primary objectives. An aircraft with these performance capabilities can operate long-distance flights in a fraction of the time.
They mention that the aircraft would be able to take off and land just as any other passenger aircraft would and would have no trouble being able to be serviced by airport ground handlers. The goals for having a smooth and stable integration into the current market would appeal to many consumers.
This new aircraft was just announced today on August 3rd, 2020 as they signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Rolls-Royce. Rolls-Royce has a long history of providing extraordinary performance in their product. The Concorde, which was the only civil-certified commercial aircraft to ever fly at supersonic speeds was powered by Rolls-Royce engines.
Virgin Galactic has been working with regulators and experts from Boeing and Rolls-Royce to assist with the mission towards redesigning the future of global travel with the main focus being in customer service.
The Mission Concept review program milestone, as well as the official authorization from the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Center for Emerging Concepts and innovation, are working alongside Virgin Galactic to design the certification Framework. This is part of a major move forward towards the completion of the aircraft and their progress towards becoming a brand that leads with their focus on customer experience and environmental sustainability.
George Whitesides, Chief Space Officer, Virgin Galactic said, “We are excited to complete the Mission Concept Review and unveil this initial design concept of a high speed aircraft, which we envision as blending safe and reliable commercial travel with an unrivalled customer experience. We are pleased to collaborate with the innovative team at Rolls-Royce as we strive to develop sustainable, cutting-edge propulsion systems for the aircraft, and we are pleased to be working with the FAA to ensure our designs can make a practical impact from the start. We have made great progress so far, and we look forward to opening up a new frontier in high speed travel.”
Company Announces Completion of Mission Concept Review Program Milestone
“We are excited to partner with Virgin Galactic and TSC to explore the future of sustainable high speed flight,” said Rolls-Royce North America Chairman & CEO Tom Bell. “Rolls-Royce brings a unique history in high speed propulsion, going back to the Concorde, and offers world-class technical capabilities to develop and field the advanced propulsion systems needed to power commercially available high-Mach travel.”
