U.S receives 2 million face masks from South Korea

In Seoul on May 11th, 2020 the Government of South Korea sends a National Air Cargo, Boeing 747 with 2 Million masks to the United States. The masks were given to help fight against the coronavirus, stated the foreign ministry.

President Moon Jae-in of South Korea and President Donald Trump discussed the two countries collabortation towards battling the COVID-19 pandemic. The masks that were sent were part of the disccussion which took place back on March 24th.

This is not the first time that the government of South Korea has provided humanitarian aid to the United States. Back in 2005 Seoul sent $5 million (USD) when the U.S. had experienced significant damage from Hurricane Katrina.

The supplies which were loaded on National Airlines Boeing 747 were schedule to arrive in the United States early on Monday morning. National Airlines a U.S. based airline has been flying multiple flights for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). For decades National Airlines has provided cargo and passenger charter services on their fleet of Boeing 747 and Boeing 757.

In a statement found on Yonhap, by the foreign ministry, The supplies will be distributed to medical institutions at the vanguard of the anti-virus campaign.

“The provision followed comprehensive considerations, such as our country’s domestic COVID-19 situation and the local supply and demand for masks, and the need for support for our ally, the U.S.,” the ministry said in a press release.

“We hope that South Korea and the U.S. will quickly overcome the shared challenge of the COVID-19 disease through this support, and this can contribute to sharing Korea’s quarantine experience with the international community,” it added.

U.S. Ambassador to South Korea Harry Harris expressed gratitude for the mask provision.
